1. Interview Dress Code
It is said that one should dress for the job they want, not the job they have. Keeping that in mind, your attire should be a reflection of your personality and your aspirations. A well-dressed candidate is good on the eyes. And they create a positive impression in the interviewer’s mind.
When I say well-dressed, it doesn’t necessarily mean expensively dressed, but appropriately.
Interview dress code depends a lot on the kind of job and the kind of organization you are applying for. For corporate jobs, it should be formal, while when you are interviewing for a star-up company, casual attire might go better.
Here we will discuss Interview Dress Code for different types of interviews.
A. Interview Dress Code for Corporate Office Setup
- Full-sleeve formal shirt
- Solid-colored suit
- Matching trousers
- Dress shoes (shoes must be in a good condition. Soiled/ dusty/ rugged shoes are a no-no.)
- Socks must be clean and not smelly
- Tie is necessary
- Leather belt on trousers
- All clothes should be clean and ironed
- Clean-shaven look is preferred. However, if you do have beard and/or mustache, they should be trimmed well.
- Trimmed fingernails
- Brushed and formal hairstyle
- Should wear a mild fragrance
Generally, both Indian and Western formal wear are acceptable for women. However, finding it out before attending the interview will help.
- In Indian wear, both Saree and Salwar-Kurta is acceptable. However, they all should have a formal look.
- Cotton or Muslin Saree/ Kurta- preferably solid-colored or having subtle prints
- No flashy color or patterns
- No Jeans and Leggings
- If wearing Western wear- can go for formal suit (same as men’s interview dress code)
- Trousers or formal skirts- both are acceptable- if wearing skirts, wearing stockings are necessary.

- No flashy jewelry, keeping things minimal is the key here. Studs for ears, wristwatches, plain rings are the only jewelry you should wear.
- All clothes should be clean and ironed
- Wearing a mild perfume helps
- Opt for a no-makeup look
- Hair should be either tied to a low bun, or if open hair is your preference, it should be well-brushed and tucked away from face. No messy hair.
- Trimmed fingernails with nude-colored/ no nail paint
B. Interview Dress Code for a Casual Setup
- If interviewing in a semi-formal environment, your interview dress code should also be business casual.
- Semi-formal shirts without the suit
- Colorful tie
- Leather shoes
- Cotton pants instead of formal trousers
- Salwar-Kameez, Saree, or Western Dresses- all are acceptable, but still need to pay attention to the color and patterns of your attire. They should not be loud.
- Heels and sandals are acceptable
- A little bit of color on lips and nails are acceptable

- Records of previous employments/ appointment letters/ relieving letters/ references
- A list of questions (for your reference only) to ask the interviewer

3. Interview Tips for Body Language
When it comes to job interviews, having the correct attitude and positive interview body language is as important as having the necessary skills. Your interview actually starts right when you enter the premises, long before your entrance to the interview room. So, maintaining some decorum while waiting in the lobby is very important.
What to do when waiting in the lobby?
- Don’t adopt an over-confidence visage to hide your insecurities. Be profession, humble and polite.
- Don’t show visible signs of nervousness either. Shaking legs, rubbing palms together, biting nails, sweating, all these are signs of lack of confidence and anxiousness. Avoid these types of behavior consciously.
- Don’t play with your electronic gadgets.
- Don’t slouch on the couch or chair. Sit in an upright and attentive position, as you would in the interview room itself.
- Don’t be impatient. Sometimes you might have to wait a long time for your turn. Showing agitation or annoyance will be detrimental.
How to behave inside the interview room?
As we have discussed earlier, it is your personality that gets tested in an interview. Don’t blow your chances by unwittingly giving them a negative signal with your behavior. Interview body language is an important aspect to take care of.
Here is a list of appropriate interview body language that you need to keep in mind.
- The 1st handshake: is of utmost importance. Initiate the handshake and offer a firm one, though, don’t squeeze the interviewer’s hand too tightly, as it is a sign of dominance and aggression. Avoid sweaty palms. If you are sweating anyway, rub it in a hanky or on your knee.
- Maintain eye contact at all times. Keep a hint of smile in your lips, but don’t grin.
- Pay attention to your voice. Keep the volume standard, not too loud, and not to faint either. Talk in a polite manner.
- Don’t talk too fast or too slow. Both of them are signs of nervousness.
- Sit straight, and look attentive. Don’t let your eyes wander off to the farther corner of the room, or to the ceiling. Don’t yawn.
- Listen to the interviewers carefully, and when they are finished, only then start talking. Don’t interrupt the interviewer in the middle.
