Resume Format

Traditionally, 3 popular formats are followed while building a resume.

Chronological Resume Format:

What is it?

In this format, your academic and technical qualifications are mentioned first and highlighted, rather than the work experience. The qualifications are mentioned chronologically, or more commonly reverse-chronologically, mentioning the most recent qualifications earlier.

Functional Resume Format:

What is it?

In this format, the work experience is mentioned first and highlighted, rather than the academic qualifications. Details of current and previous jobs are given priority.

Who should use it?

  • Candidates who have subsequent experience in the relevant field, who are looking for better opportunities.

Combination Format:

What is it?

In this format, the user can take liberty and highlight any part they want by including them in the beginning, be it their skills, work experiences, or qualifications.

Who should use it?

  • Creative people in non-conventional jobs
  • People involved in performance-based jobs
  • Freelancers

Resume Header

What is it?

This is the title of your resume. It should mention your name and designation in big, bold fonts.

Who should use it?

  • Everyone.

Resume Summary

What is it?

This is a short paragraph, generally consisting of no more than 3 or 4 sentences/ bullet-points. The resume summary is the most important part of a resume. You should include the most important things about yourself within this short span. Most recruiters read only the Summary sections and decide whether the rest of the resume is worth reading or not.

Resume Objective

What is it?

A resume objective is a statement that describes your long-term professional goal. It describes what you want out of your job.

Who should use it?

  • People who are changing their careers mid-ways.
  • Anybody else depending on the personal preference of the user.

Work Experience

What is it?

Your most recent history of employments in reverse-chronological order (up to the last 10 years). Mentioning only the name of the organizations and your designations are not advised. Include a brief description of your roles and responsibilities as well.

Who should use it?

  • Everyone who has a work history.

Hobbies & Interests

What is it?

You can list a few of your personal interests and hobbies in your resume. The idea is to give the recruiter an idea about the person you are.

Who should use it?

  • Anyone, especially if your hobbies are in some way related to the field of work.

Which things should I never include on a Resume?

  1. Physical address
  2. GPA/ Percentage (if it’s lower than 3.5 or 50%)
  3. Gender/ marital status
  4. Salary expectations
  5. Jobs that you held for a very short period of time
  6. Information related to your political or religious affiliation
